The Central Coast offers a plethora of options for swimming. Whether you’re looking at swimming in some of the best beaches in Australia, ocean baths, or even our public pools the Central Coast has it all covered. However one of the most popular past times lately has been wild swimming and the Central Coast has many options! This giant playground has countless wild swimming options, however, if you don’t mind a little bit of a hike. Kariong Brook Falls is one of the best wild swimming spots in NSW and it’s in our own backyard!
Located in the largest national park on the Central Coast, Brisbane Water National Park you’ll find this Central Coast hidden gem. Kariong Brook Falls is one of the most stunning waterfalls on the Central Coast with many people arguing it rivals the more popular Somersby Falls. Whilst it is a beautiful waterfall, it is also the perfect spot for some wild swimming. The water cascades down the rocks into a large natural pool surrounded by dense bush and rocks. Whilst the location can get busy during weekends and during school holidays, head to the falls on a weekday and chances are you’ll have the place to yourself.
However, there are a few things to note about this location. At least half of the track to the falls is on an open fire trail. This means that there is little shade on the track for refuge on a hot day, and also that you will need to be extra mindful of snakes. The eastern brown snake is commonly seen basking in the sun on this fire trail so care needs to be taken. We recommend carrying a snake bite kit while hiking so you are prepared.
It is also important to note that this is not an easy hike. You will need to climb down into a gully and whilst there is a track, it is steep and rock scrambling will need to take place on the way back up. Therefore we recommend wearing hiking shoes to make sure you are safe and can confidently climb the rocks. Do not wear thongs or slides.
With all this being said below is the hiking guide to Kariong Brook Falls, one of the best waterfalls Central Coast has to offer.
